Lost a filling and think I need a crown

Lost a filling and think I need a crown

By: Patient Email Withheld, Scottsdale, AZ
Need Dentist / Specialist: Yes
Provide Cost Estimate: Yes
X-rays Available: No
Case Summary
Filling Broken Tooth Crown
Teeth: 31
Last Full Mouth X-Ray: 2 years
Last Cleaning: 2 years
Case Description
About a year ago I lost most of a filling on one of my rear molars. When the filling broke, I had just lost my dental coverage. I am still without dental coverage, but the pain from this tooth is now a constant ache. I have been using Ibuprofen throughout the day and right before bed each night.

I am now facing the reality that I am going to have to have this resolved before I am able to find benefits again. I believe my last dentist suggested that this specific filling be replaced with a crown after my last cleaning. I've been told that gold crowns have less chance of breaking or causing adverse effects on other teeth.

1. How much does a crown cost without insurance? 2. What is the price difference between a standard crown and using gold?

P.S. I'll drive 50 miles for a great dentist with excellent prices.

When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
  • Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
  • Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description, special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
  • Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
  • Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors. Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.

Cost Estimate: $800
Hi,

Thanks for your inquiry. More times than not, broken teeth will need to be restored with full coverage crowns. In addition, root canal treatment may be necessary depending on the depth of the decay present inside your tooth. Only way to truley find out if root canal therapy is needed by cleaning the tooth out and seeing what is left.

Several types of crowns, most commonly all gold or porcelain fused to metal. Our fees are the same for both. Gold restorations do last longer and are generally better in all aspects except cosmetically.

Our fee for crown and build up is $800. We do offer discounts and payment plans to make your dental care more affordable. I would suggest you come in for a complimentry set of xrays and a full exam to see exactly what it is that you need.

Cost Estimate: $$1214 to $2400
First of all there is a good chance that the tooth may need endodontic treatment, since the filling has been out for a year.

A gold crown runs $982 and the tooth will also need a build-up to replace the void left from the lost filling and decay.

A porcelain fused to gold crown or all porcelain crown costs the same as a gold crown , $982.

If the tooth is abcessing, there are only 2 choices, root canal treatment or extraction. The only way to diagnose if the tooth in question can be salvaged is to have an exam along with any needed x-rays.

A root canal on a molar runs about $1000.
